Upcycle wine bottles into a wall

by Debra Anchors

A patio wall created from glass bottles
I have seen many examples of partitions and walls created from glass bottles on the Internet. This one is my favorite.

Wall of bottles - Closeup
To create your own colorful glass structure, drill holes through the bottom of each bottle, using a diamond drill bit, and then guide 1/2" rebar through the holes to create the wall.

Note:  For convenience, I have embedded links into the text that will take you to the products used in this project.

Recycle, upcycle and do it yourself? Absolutely! Have you upcycled something unique for your garden from recycled materials? Please share it with me so I can feature your creation here.

  1. This a perfect solution for my deceased son's Jagermeister bottle collection. I couldn't just throw them out.

    1. Hi there! Thank you for being here. I found this wall online with no credit given to the creator, so I cannot answer you definitively.

In regard to anchoring the rebar to the cement floor, I found a very good instructional video from Quikrete - http://www.quikrete.com/athome/Video-Anchoring-Epoxy.asp - you won't, of course, need to use the stud braces.

Once the rebar is in place, and the bottles are threaded through, could a notched 2x4 be used to support the rebar from the roof?

Should you complete this project, I would really appreciate you letting me know how it went! -Debra

  7. You an use specialty paints to swirl into the insides of clear wine bottles for added variety and color.

  8. I absolutely LOVE your work!! We are going to do a similar project, using the bottles as the "spindles", on a new deck we are building next spring. Do you think it will work? Also, do you know where I can get some nice bottles? If not, I have a LOT of drinking to do this winter!! LOL

    1. Hi there! Thank you for the compliment!

That sounds like it would be gorgeous - great idea! I have found that friends are happy to save bottles, and also your local restaurants and bars are happy to give them away as long as you pick them up from them on a regular basis. Of course, drinking the winter away is always an option too!

Good luck with your project! Would you please send me a photograph when your deck is done? I would love to see it!

  10. Ooppps....one more questions: Do you know what is used between the bottles? Looks like a rubber ball??
    Thanks!

  11. beautiful idea but what do you use to "anchor" the bottles on the rebar? Can they just be placed one against the other? Wouldn't wind and rain eventually cause movement and breakage?

  12. The largest diamond bit we could find made a hole too small for rebar what size drill bit are you using?

  13. You are so particularistic. Seems like it's hard to make it. nice share

  14. Hi! I have been saving bottles for YEARS! And am beginning construction! I spent hours yesterday and only got 6 bottles drilled! I’m using a diamond drill bit attached to a hand drill. Any tips or tricks to speed the process?

  15. I’m doing a low wall around my garden, so the height is 3’ and bottles are framed within a wood fence. I’m using 1/4” round rod and a 1/4” core diamond drill bit. Any advice you have is appreciated!
